Interview with White Wizard Games – the publishers of KAPOW!

1. Hello! Please let us know a few things about yourself!

Hello! I am the CEO of White Wizard Games, a designer of Star Realms, a Magic the Gathering Hall of Famer, a father of 7, and I love making games!

 

2. How did the idea of picking up KAPOW and republishing it come up?

Debbie Moynihan (White Wizard Games COO) saw the first KAPOW! Kickstarter and was intrigued, but didn’t end up backing because she wasn’t sure a first time publisher could pull off the customizable dice.
Then at the Boston Festival of Indie Games the KAPOW! team had a booth near us. The buildable dice looked great, and like ours, their booth had a lot of energy with tons of demos going on. We really wanted to play KAPOW!, but were too busy at the show, so we invited them over to our house to play. We absolutely fell in love with the game, and Carl, Doug and Larry were interested in partnering with a larger publisher to bring KAPOW! to the next level.

 

3. What was the greatest challenge that you faced during the designing and development of the second edition of game?

This was a team effort, with the KAPOW! team taking the lead on design, and our team taking the lead on development. I would say the biggest challenge was that we couldn’t actually meet up and play since the pandemic began. I would have loved to be able to play together in person with the team more. I’m lucky that I have multiple people at home that I can play with that range quite a bit in their style of play.

 

4. Which aspect of design did you enjoy the most?

In this case, the KAPOW! team designed all of the new heroes and villains. It has been a pleasure to work with such an amazing team of designers. It has been awesome as a publisher to be able to work with such talented designers and bring a game to market.

 

5. Which is your favorite hero or villain?

My favorite hero is Mindset. I love her art and the ability to do multiple base attacks can create some really interesting decisions for me and my opponent. My favorite villain is Victor Kane. I just love having extra dice!

 

6. Would you like to share some key elements that you are excited about? What makes this game special?

The customizeable dice are awesome. The faces go on smoothly and the dice rolling is amazing. I have played this game countless times and it is always fun. Every turn has suspense and you really feel like you are duking it out with your opponent. The characters are cool and figuring out the best strategy for each matchup is a challenge.

 

7. What kind of gaming experience do you want to create with this game?

When the game is over, I want opponents to look at each other smiling and say “Again?” KAPOW! can be set-up quickly and played with anyone. I’ve played this with my 6-year-old daughter. I’ve played this with my video gamer kids. I’ve played this with competitive Magic players. I love that it is super easy to teach but also has deep strategy for those who want it. We’ve demoed this at several conventions, and players of Star Realms and Hero Realms loved it. We quickly sold out of the remaining inventory from the original print run, and we ended up selling our demo copies.
